A native of California, Bliss graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts in1968. After moving to France and working as a printer and publisher he returned to California with his wife Marie-Noelle and their two children. They returned to France every summer. Although he produced art in a variety of media he did not support himself as an artist and he spent his career as the curator of rare books and manuscripts at the Bancroft Library in Berkeley.
The Rhinoceros etching is his best known work.
