Robin Hopper, an internationally renowned potter, teacher, author, and arts activist, passed away in 2017. Born in England in 1939, he trained at Croydon College of Art before immigrating to Canada in 1968. He taught at Central Technical School in Toronto and founded the Ceramics and Glass Department at Georgian College. After dedicating himself full-time to his ceramic work, he moved to Victoria, British Columbia, and in 1977 became the first recipient of the prestigious Bronfman Award. Just before his death, he was honored with the Order of Canada, recognizing his immense contributions to the arts. His ceramic work is held in public and private collections around the world.
A prolific author and educator, Hopper wrote influential books such as The Ceramic Spectrum and Functional Pottery, along with his autobiography, Robin Hopper Ceramics. He also developed several educational video series, including "Making Marks" and "Form and Function," which have become valuable resources for ceramists. Hopper's work over 55 years included extensive historical and technical research, culminating in unique art pieces, primarily in porcelain, with his later interests focused on glaze paintings. Alongside his dedication to ceramics, his other great passion was garden design, particularly Oriental gardens, which he featured in his book A Potter's Garden. He was also the founding president of the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts.
