Betty Black (Elizabeth Nina Stokvis) born April 18, 1928, Vancouver BC; died September 4, 2006 Vancouver, B.C. She attended Magee High School and started studies of drawing and painting at the Vancouver School of Art. However she left school and had a successful career as a fashion model. In 1959, a single parent of two small girls, she returned to the Vancouver School of Art and in 1963 graduated with honours in Painting. She was closely associated with Bill Reid from the late 1950s to the mid 1960s. The Bill Reid Gallery has her drawing titled Bill Reid Working (circa 1970) in their permanent collection. She went on to become a respected painter in Western Canada and was known nationally. She exhibited at the Northwest Artists Annual Exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum in 1963, and British Columbia Annual Exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1965. She was included in Three Hours Later the catalogue of BC Artists and their work produced by the New Era Social Club in 1974. As Betty Stovkis she is listed as a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in their 1979 list of members. She was included in the Artists in Canada Union List of Artists Files at the National Gallery of Canada in 1982. She was included in the British Columbia Women Artists travelling exhibition organized by the Art Galley of Greater Victoria in 1985. The records of the Richmond Art Gallery shows her as having exhibited sometime between 1980 and 2005.
