Casson joined the Group of Seven in 1926 to replace Franz Johnston and was known for his distinctive style, which involved simplifying forms and eliminating nonessentials, especially in his later, more abstract work. He worked for many years as a commercial artist for Sampson-Matthews, retiring as Vice-President and Art Director in 1957 to focus on his art full-time. He died in 1992 and is buried on the grounds of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection along with six other rmembers of the Group of Seven.
