Lot 463 pcs. Dan Rubin and Rick Scott, The Dill Pickle Rag
All three issues of the very scarce West Coast Journal of Music and Celebration. Volume One published in the summer of 1976, Volume Two in the autumn of 1976 and Volume Three undated. Newspaper format full size 16 5/8" x 11" folded to 8 3/8" x 11". Each issue 16 pages at full size. B/w throughout. Paper has yellowed and has handling wear at the edges, but all copies are intact with no creases or tears. Fully readable. The subject matter was wide ranging and eclectic. In addition to the text, each issue contains the sheet music for eight songs. Dan Rubin and Rick Scott edited and published The Dill Pickle Rag for the Gary Lansdown Society for Local Music. Lansdown and Rubin were part of the vibrant Lasquiti Island counter culture community of the 1970s, described in the book Accidental Eden: Hippie Days on Lasquiti Island by Douglas L. Hamilton and Darlene Olesko. Lansdown and Rubin performed in The Spaghetti Island Stringband together, copies of a cassette of one of their live performances at Open Space in Victoria exist, somewhere. Originally from San Francisco, Lansdown was killed at the age of 19 in a car accident while on his way to perform. He had trained as a classical guitarist but also loved to play bluegrass. Rick Scott was a phenomenal musician who is widely remembered as a member of Pied Pumkin and Pied Pear. Over the course of his career he released 18 albums including a 4-CD musical audio novel and seven children's CDs. He received three Juno nominations and Parents' Choice, Family Choice. NAPPA Gold, iParenting Media, Children's Music Web and Canadian Folk Music Awards. In 2014 with the Vancouver Island Symphony he premiered MY SYMPHONY, an educational concert seen by over 10,000 children. In 2018 he was awarded the Nanaimo Cultural Excellence Award. In 2019 he was inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame.
