The Vinland Saga draws upon two 14th-century sources: The Saga of the Greenlanders and The Saga of Eirik the Red. While these accounts cannot be considered entirely reliableno written records were kept by the explorers themselvesthey nonetheless carry a strong sense of authenticity. Their detailed observations of seafaring, geography, wildlife, cultures, and even astronomy lend credibility to the idea that they are rooted in real historical events.
The story of the Viking attempt to settle North America is not told through images, but through wordsfragmented, enduring, and evocative. Over time, that effort faded. The devastation of the bubonic plague swept across Europe, drastically reducing the populations of Norway and Denmark and ultimately severing contact with the distant Greenland colonies.
By the end of the 13th century, the Norse settlements in Greenland had been abandoned. Their inhabitants vanished, leaving the land to be occupied by the Skraelingsthe Inuit peoples. Within less than two centuries, new European explorers would arrive on the shores of the Americas. By then, the Norse voyages had slipped into obscurity, becoming little more than a faint echo, lost in the passage of time.
The Vinland Exhibition has since traveled widely across Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas. It has been displayed in museums throughout Europe and the United States, as well as in all sixteen of Canada's National Museums.
