Lot 30Robin Righton, meduim sized vase in brown and red
Robin Righton, brown and red vase, chopped on bottom. 7.5" tall. Condition: very good condition with no chips or cracks. Righton studied with Walter Dexter at the Kootenay School of Art between 1968 and 1971. Others at KSA at that time included potters Ted Driediger, Geoff Searle, and Linda Mackie with whom he established Swan Lake Pottery (Victoria) in 1972. At the start of his career, Righton focused on stoneware with wax resist decoration. By the mid 70s he was producing raku which over the next 2 decades would become a central part of his output. By 1980 he had also begun working in porcelain and making plates incorporating figures and landscapes. Righton exhibited and sold work frequently at craft fairs and galleries mainly on Vancouver Island and often with Linda Mackie, his partner in Swan Lake Pottery. These include annual and semi-annual Craft fairs at the University of Victoria (1973-1978) and Christmas sales at the Empress Hotel (1973-1986). He consistently sold work through the Maples Gallery in Saanich, BC (1979-1987), at the Hand Loom in Victoria (1972 -1990) and at numerous other galleries both on the Island and in Vancouver. In the late 1980s, he also exhibited with Vancouver Island Potters at their annual exhibition/sales in Metchosin. Biography courtesy of the Craft Archive.
