Carl Stromquist was born in Hope, B.C. in 1969 of Coast Salish heritage. Primarily self taught he began working as a full-time artist in 1992 with the production of original paintings and limited edition prints. He also worked with glass under sculptor Douglas Baker, with whom he would later collaborate.He began working in wood in 1997 after training with Coast Salish artist George Pennier. Stromquist cites Robert Davidson, Dempsey Bob, and Charles Edenshaw as influences. Interestingly, he has expressed a strong interest in Egyptian forms and motifs, which can occasionally be seen in his designs.
