Mary Rowat Bull (Canadian, 1919-2010) was born in Troon, Scotland. The daughter of a military captain, Bull was brought to the Okanagan by her parents as a baby and considered the Valley home.
Bull was educated at Mount St. Michael's Academy in Vernon and later at Vancouver's Crofton House School. She studied at the Vancouver School of Art from 1938 to 1939 and at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto from 1941 to 1943. She travelled the world, training in her passion, studying portraiture at the Slade School of Fine Art and the Heatherley School of Fine Art, in London, England, in the 1950s, and later abstract art and batik at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Her paintings are large and playful, often depicting figures in distorted form, with bold and vibrant uses of colour.
Bull served as director of the Okanagan Historical Society and as President of the Kelowna Art Society. She received the Honour in the Arts Award from the Kelowna and District Arts Council and the City of Kelowna in 1978. She exhibited her work at the Kelowna Art Gallery and other local galleries. She has work in the permanent collections of the Kelowna Art Gallery, the Vernon Art Gallery, the Lake Country Museum and Archives and the Penticton Art Gallery.
